Overview

The institute for Subatomic Physics hosts half of the ALICE Netherlands group, located at the 7th floor of the Buys Ballot Building. The other part of the group is located at Nikhef (Dutch institute for nuclear physics - Amsterdam), the two groups meet regularly (weekly or more).

PhD's are distributed among Utrecht University (11) and Nikhef (3). Nikhef has its own PhD council, representing subatomic physics PhD's (both theory, experimental and computer science) from Utrecht University, Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), and the Rijksuniversiteit Nijmegen. All these insitutes are also connected into a `research school of subatomic physics', which organizes national topical lectures and international schools which are mandatory for the PhD progrma.

Teaching load

Teaching duties are not well-defined, asides from the requirement that each PhD assists as a T.A. 3 times during the course of the PhD, and is the daily supervisor of a number of bachelor or master theses (the number fluctuates naturally with the number of students). Daily supervision includes preparing research topics, hardware supervision, thesis supervision, grading, etc, etc.
